Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36th President of the United States. Johnson succeeded to the presidency subsequent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, completed Kennedy's term and was voted President in his own right, winning by a great margin in the 1964 Presidential election. Johnson was very much supported by the Democratic Party and, as President, was answerable for designing the "Great Society" legislation that included laws that upheld civil rights. He really escalated direct American involvement in the Vietnam War. Despite the failures of his foreign policy, Johnson is ranked positively among some historians due to his domestic policies.
