Bonnie and Clyde - robbers, outlaws and criminals

http://the-american-history.blogspot.com/
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were well recognized robbers, outlaws and criminals who, with their gang, travel the Central United States during the Great Depression. Their exploits capture the notice of the American public during what is occasionally referred to as the "public enemy era" between 1931 and 1934. Though recognized today for his dozen-or-so bank robberies, Barrow in fact preferred to rob small stores or rural gas stations. The gang is supposed to have killed at least nine police officers and committed several civilian murders. The couple themselves were lastly ambushed and killed in Louisiana by law officers. Their standing was cemented in American pop folklore by Arthur Penn's 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde.

Even during their lifetimes, the couple's representation in the press was at considerable odds with the hardscrabble realism of their life on the road, mostly in the case of Parker. Even though she was physically there at a hundred or more felonies during her two years as Barrow's companion, she was not the machine gun wield cartoon killer portray in the newspapers, newsreels, and, particularly, the pulpy detective magazines of the day. Gang member W. D. Jones was unsure whether he had still seen her fire at officers. Parker's repute as a cigar smoking gun moll grow out of a playful snapshot found deserted by police at a hideout, out to the press, and published nationwide; while she did sequence smoke Camel cigarettes, she was not a cigar smoker.

EARLY AMERICAN UNDERHAMMER FIREARMS

Heretofore factual underhammer history has been a rather sketchy subject at best. Yes, there have been occasional articles relating to specific examples of underhammer arms in various firearms history and collectors journals, and, of course, there is Hershel Logan’s book on underhammers which was written over fifty years ago. However, to my knowledge there has never been a definitive work on the complete history of the origins and evolution of the underhammer system here in America – that is, until now.

Noted underhammer researcher and scholar, Nicholas L. Chandler, has devoted untold years in research, compiling data and photos, and writing what is sure to become the new standard reference on the subject of early American underhammer arms. You may recall that the previous post below is a review about one of Mr. Chandler’s articles about the origins of the underhammer concept. His is a fascinating story to say the least, but he didn’t stop there.

His new book, EARLY AMERICAN UNDERHAMMER FIREARMS, is published by Mobray Publishing of Woonsocket, Rhode Island and features 192 pages of information and over 350 clear and detailed photos that tell the real story of the origins and development of the underhammer percussion system beginning in 1820s New England.

At only $59.99 this fine book would be a wonderful Christmas gift. However, if you want to receive it in time for this Christmas, I would suggest you contact Mobray Publishing - like Pronto. They can be reached at 1-800-999-4697 or go visit their website: http://gunandswordcollector.com for more information. In closing, let me say that if you liked Mr. Chandler's underhammer article, you're going to love his book!

Clicking on the promo flyer above will expand it for

Our thanks to Mr. Chandler for his dedication and efforts in providing this treasure trove of information for all of us underhammer aficionados.

Jesse James - American outlaw, gang leader, robber, murderer

http://the-american-history.blogspot.com/
Jesse James was an American outlaw, gang leader, bank robber, train robber, and murderer from the state of Missouri and the mainly famous member of the James Younger Gang. Already a famous person when he was alive, he became a famous figure of the Wild West after his death. Some new scholars place him in the context of regional insurgencies of ex-Confederates following the American Civil War rather than an expression of frontier lawlessness or economic justice. Jesse and his brother Frank James were partner guerrillas during the Civil War. They were accused of join in atrocities committed against Union soldiers.

After the war, as associate of one gang or another, they robbed banks, stagecoaches, and trains. Despite popular portrayals of James as a kind of Robin Hood, robbing from the wealthy and giving to the poor, there is no proof that he and his gang used their robbery gains for anyone but themselves. The James brothers were most active with their gang from about 1866 until 1876, when their effort robbery of a bank in Northfield, Minnesota, resulted in the imprison or deaths of several members. On April 3, 1882, Jesse James was killed by Robert Ford, who was an associate of the gang living in the James house and who was hopeful to collect a state reward on James' head.
